A glimpse of what the trips are like …
Peru: Experience the Cultural and Physical Landscapes
of Andean South America –– 19 – 20 days
Inti Raymi
Cultural Geography – Live
I taught Cultural Geography, looking at the intersection points of people, culture, religion, politics, economics, and environment.I help learners explore all of these dynamics, finding common threads and patterns while seeking newer paradigms to bring about change.I enjoy taking the classroom “live” out into the field and will be doing so this summer for people interested in an immersion into the heart and soul of South America.
Stepping Into Another Dimension
Pilgrimage and Photo Odyssey
We will wander off the beaten path into the arms of the people who shape and are shaped by the beautiful landscapes and terrain. This culturally- and environmentally-sensitive journey will take us from desert coasts, to mountains, and to rainforests, where we will gently weave ourselves into the tapestries of life, hopefully establishing connections that can be nurtured from afar.
Spontaneity: Allow for the Unscheduled Magic
This is not your usual journey. While we certainly visit sites long recognized for their beauty and impact, this odyssey is also an immersion into village and farm life, squatters settlements and street children, ecotourism and microcredit. We will stay in people’s homes, understand how small loans and land entitlement have helped them redefine their lives, and watch them at their traditional craft. We will build bonds with several communities as part of an ongoing program of support.
Cloud Forests and More
In the Valle Sagrado of Peru, we will walk, hike, and/or bike our way through ruins and bustling market places. In the rainforest, we will let our eyes be trained by the indigenous community hosting us as we take in the chatter and hum of the wildlife. In the altiplano and on Lake Titicaca, we will let the spirit of the lake and the Incas speak to us while we bask in the vibrant blue waters.
Our Goal:
The purpose of the trip is to step into the cultural and physical landscapes of part of Andean South America. While we certainly visit sites long recognized for their touristic beauty and impact, we will wander off the beaten path into the arms of the people who shape and are shaped by the beautiful landscapes and terrain. We will step into another dimension, exploring the spirit of those commonly labeled “impoverished.”But we will experience the heart and soul of these many people, understanding their gifts, their needs, their self-initiation.We will gently weave ourselves into their tapestries of life, hopefully establishing connections that can be nurtured from afar.
This year’s focus is to identify a small village that will be the seed village for a Ten Thousand Cranes project. The project will begin small, perhaps focusing on sending school supplies or helping village members develop microcredit project plans, but will build over the years.Ten Thousand Cranes will post photos and information about the village on the TTC web site, updating viewers about village activities.Trips in subsequent years will visit the village, interacting with people and their projects, and helping expand opportunities for the villagers.
